First was getting it mowed. My neighbor was kind enough to allow me to bring a tractor through his yard in order to get to the only opening to the field. I hired a local farmer to bush hog the field. I was happy to see the land was terraced and even happier that for the most part the terraces followed the contour of the land. Between each terrace was a mound that was about 12 inches higher than the up hill terrace. This formed a small swale before the next drop allowing water to seep into the land instead of running off causing erosion. They are not perfect on contour and some of the swales needed a little repair but I was very happy with my first look. Next was starting to plan out were to place buildings, ponds, trees, roads and fencing. Property view from the sky. I used google earth to get an overview. I blew this image up and printed it out. We had a bunch of copies and drew a few designs.

This was my first view of the land when I bought it back in July 2013. There's 120 feet of road front to access the land. At the entrance from the road there was about 40 feet of grass. After that there was 350 feet of woods with a wet weather creek cutting through it. The creek is small, it is more like a ditch, about 4 feet wide and only 2 feet deep. It was an obstacle that had to be crossed. After cutting through the woods it opens up to beautiful weed covered field. The homestead is about 9 acres total. It was mostly fenced. My only access was the 120 foot wide path through the woods. My first challenge was getting the field mowed so I could see the land better. I had Google maps but that isn't the same as seeing it from a ground view. To be continued.
